Honouring Our Outstanding Network: Announcing the 2026 Prisms Award Recipients!

What an extraordinary gathering we experienced at NTE East! Beyond the valuable insights and connections shared throughout the week, we had the privilege of shining a spotlight on the exceptional talent driving independent eye care across Eastern Canada.

This year, Eye Recommend proudly introduced The Prisms: a brand-new awards program designed to celebrate the remarkable independent optometrists and practice team members whose vision, passion, and patient-first mindset elevate our entire network.

From Manitoba to Nova Scotia and every province in between—including Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador—we were blown away by the calibre of nominations submitted.

During our closing celebration at NTE East, we officially revealed this year's honourees. These standout individuals reflect the very best of our profession, setting the bar through their dedication to practice excellence, leadership, and community impact.

Help us celebrate the official recipients of the Eastern Canadian 2026 Prisms Awards!

🏆 The Trailblazer Award

Recognizing optometrists under 40 who are already making a profound mark on the profession and the practices they work in.

2026 Winner: Dr. Megan Burns – Beyond 20/20 Optometry

“After opening the practice in 2019, she guided its growth into a 5,500-square-foot facility with 16 employees and a regional patient base spanning Atlantic Canada, Quebec, and Maine... Her influence has been recognized through Atlantic Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 businesswomen and Greater Moncton’s Top 40 Under 40 honours.”

🏆 Humanitarian of the Year

Honouring optometrists whose commitment to service goes far beyond the walls of their practice and deeply into their communities.

2026 Winner: Dr. Michaela Hellinga – St. Lawrence Optometry

“At 28, Dr. Hellinga has already built an exceptional record of humanitarian service. Her work with vulnerable populations, remote communities, international outreach, and youth volleyball demonstrates energy, discipline, and a commitment to helping others.

She consistently shares her expertise, works beyond expectations, and keeps learning so she can serve people more effectively. Her example encourages colleagues and community members to contribute with purpose.”

🏆 Patient Care Excellence Award

Celebrating the non-optometrist team members who show up for patients every single day, delivering exceptional care and consistently going above and beyond.

2026 Winner: Sindhu Kulal – Vaughan Vision Centre

“Sindhu is nominated for extraordinary compassion and dedication to patients living with severe vision loss, ocular disease, and chronic pain... In one especially difficult case, she supported a patient for six months, adapting her approach and making time before and during busy workdays rather than allowing repeated setbacks to end the treatment.

Her persistence enabled the patient to manage the lenses independently, substantially reduce pain, improve vision, and return to work, driving, and daily life.”

🏆 Thought Leader of the Year

Applauding the optometrists, operations leaders, and managers who are pushing the profession forward with innovative thinking and bold ideas.

2026 Winner: Dr. Kristel Jefferies – Ottawa Valley Vision

“She has led clinic design and team development to deliver high-quality care and also contributes nationally as vice-president of Vision Therapy Canada. Her commitment to innovation, professional growth, and the life-changing power of vision makes her a compelling Thought Leader of the Year nominee.”

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who put forward a nomination, and congratulations again to all of our nominees and winners. Your daily commitment is what makes the Eye Recommend community truly exceptional!
