Locations: Halifax Regional Municipality (Halifax & Dartmouth) | South Shore (Bridgewater) | Northern NS (Truro)
Position Type: Full-Time
Pathways: Associate to Partnership / Equity Ownership Potential
Large corporate organizations can offer guaranteed daily rates, substantial signing incentives, and the ready-made infrastructure of a national network. For some optometrists, that is exactly the right environment.
We offer something fundamentally different.
Ocean Optometry and Miller Optometry represent a genuinely independent group of practices across Nova Scotia—spanning the vibrant urban core of Halifax and Dartmouth, the beautiful South Shore in Bridgewater, and our newest location in Truro.
We value real-world experience and business curiosity over years on a diploma. We're looking for an OD who understands the commercial reality of independent practice and wants to actively shape both patient care and long-term clinic growth.
Independent practice has natural ebbs and flows. Some weeks are exceptionally busy. Others create room to develop deeper relationships, elevate the patient experience, introduce patients to specialized solutions they didn't know existed, connect with our local communities, and strategize where our practice should go next.
We don't believe an Associate's contribution begins when a patient enters the exam room and ends when the prescription is signed. We do not measure success simply by counting how many examinations appear on tomorrow's schedule.
We are looking for an OD who sees the bigger picture.
Taking time to understand the person sitting in front of you—asking about their work, family, hobbies, driving habits, and digital demands.
Making thoughtful, complete clinical recommendations rather than simply handing over a prescription.
Recognizing opportunities to develop specialized areas of care (e.g., dry eye management, specialty contact lenses, myopia control) that genuinely benefit our patient base.
Building deep relationships that turn first-time patients into lifelong patients, families into multi-generational patients, and great experiences into organic referrals.
Understanding that when an independent practice grows, everyone contributing to that growth should prosper.
Our intent and desire is not for the Associate to be expected to disappear into an exam room while somebody in a distant head office determines what the patient experience looks like.
We encourage and welcome your ideas:
If you believe we should introduce a specialized service line, let's build it.
If you see a better way to care for a particular patient demographic, make the case.
If diagnostic technology exists that would materially improve clinical outcomes, let's investigate it.
If something about our patient journey is clunky, tell us.
If you spot a market opportunity we are missing, we want to hear about it.
We are seeking a colleague who wants influence—and embraces the commercial responsibility that comes with it.
You will not be running the practice alone. Our locations across Halifax, Dartmouth, Bridgewater, and Truro are fully staffed with dedicated pre-testers, experienced opticians, and skilled administrative team members. This support infrastructure ensures your time is focused on direct patient care, clinical decision-making, and high-level practice development.
We believe exceptional patient outcomes happen at the intersection of uncompromising clinical care and cutting-edge innovation. If you’re ready to move beyond standard assembly-line optometry and practice at the full scope of your license, our clinics are built for you.
We have invested heavily in state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic technology across every location, empowering you to offer advanced specialties, treat complex conditions, and deliver an elevated standard of care.
Every location is fully equipped with modern diagnostic and therapeutic technology:
Diagnostics & Workflow: True-color ultrawide imaging, OCT, auto-phoropters, meibographers and a unified EMR.
Within our practices we also have:
Therapeutics & Aesthetics: Dry Eye suites, IPLs, Radiofrequency (RF), TriLift, and Plexr Plus plasma technology.
Advanced diagnostics: Corneal topography, axial length measurement
Multi-modal myopia management: Prescribe the best treatment for the individual child.
We give you the time, equipment, and support to build and grow focused clinical services:
Advanced dry eye management
Myopia management
Specialty contact lens fittings
Contact lens subscription programs
We combine the technology of a major medical institute with the agility, warmth, and autonomy of an independent practice. Here, your clinical expertise and commercial vision won't be boxed in by corporate playbooks—they will directly shape the future of our business.
As an independent practice, we won't pretend we compete with corporate forgivable loans or artificial sign-on traps. Instead, we build compensation relationships where mutual success is aligned.
Flexible Structure: We are open to discussing the remuneration model that best fits your situation—whether that is a traditional percentage of gross billings, a structured salary/employed setup with earning gurantees, or a hybrid model.
Balanced Schedule: Full-time hours (4–5 days per week). Weekend duties (Saturdays) are shared equitably across our team of doctors.
Value-Driven Rewards: Your earning potential is not tied to squeezing as many patients into a day as humanly possible, but on the real value you create: clinical excellence, patient retention, optical recommendations, and practice growth.
Whether you are newly qualified, have spent time in high-volume corporate optometry, or you already have independent practice experience, the goal is to find an OD looking for freedom, autonomy and who understands what drives a clinic forward.
Enjoys developing genuine, long-term patient connections.
Understands that excellent optometry extends far beyond basic refraction.
Is comfortable offering meaningful, comprehensive vision solutions.
Sees quieter schedule slots as an opportunity to innovate rather than complain.
Recognizes that profitability and outstanding patient care go hand-in-hand.
Values professional autonomy while accepting commercial accountability.
Experience matters to us, but mindset matters more.
We are not recruiting simply to fill an empty chair. We are looking for an OD who can become a key figure in the next chapter of Ocean Optometry and Miller Optometry.
While this role begins as an Associateship, we are explicitly looking to have broader long-term conversations regarding practice growth, expanded leadership, and with whom we can define options for partnership or equity buy-in opportunities.
If your ideal position is simply a guaranteed paycheck in exchange for servicing a high-volume of eye exams, we understand that there are plenty of options available.
If you would rather help shape the practice where you spend your professional life, we would love to meet you.
Let’s start with a conversation - not an application form or an NDA.
Reach out directly for a confidential discussion about our practice locations, clinical philosophy, and how this position can be tailored to your career goals.
